About This Event

Innes National Park at the tip of the Yorke Peninsula produces a reliable and beautiful spring wildflower display across its coastal heathlands and mallee scrub. Everlastings, trigger plants, native peas, and dozens of native orchid species colour the low heath from late August through October, while the dramatic backdrop of the Southern Ocean and the old Inneston gypsum mining village add character to a walk that is unlike anywhere else in SA. The park combines wildflowers with excellent beach fishing, leafy seadragon diving, and the ruins of the historic Inneston village for a genuinely varied destination. An underrated wildflower experience that avoids the crowds of the more famous spring destinations.

Best Viewing Location

Dhilba Guuranda - Innes National Park, tip of the Yorke Peninsula - 295 km from Adelaide via Port Wakefield and the Yorke Peninsula Hwy. Sealed road to Stenhouse Bay; some internal park tracks unsealed. Park at the Stenhouse Bay or Ethel Beach day-use areas. The Coastal Scrub Walk and Investigators Trail pass through the best heathland. National Parks SA entry fee applies.

When to Visit
September

What affects timing

Generally reliable with winter rainfall. September is consistently the best month. The coastal heathlands of the southern tip (particularly around Stenhouse Bay and Ethel Beach) are the most floriferous areas. Can be combined with a leafy seadragon dive.

Safety Information

Some tracks are unsealed and require a standard 4WD or high-clearance vehicle. Carry water. Coastal cliffs in the park are unfenced.
