About This Event

Kangaroo Island's spring wildflower season transforms its mallee heathlands and coastal cliffs into a mosaic of colour. The island's relative isolation has produced several endemic plant species alongside a spectacular diversity of native orchids, everlastings, guinea flowers, and pea flowers. Flinders Chase National Park in the west, with its ancient sugar gums and diverse understorey, is the standout destination. The 2019–20 bushfires have paradoxically benefited wildflower diversity in regenerating areas — fire-stimulated species including trigger plants and grass trees have erupted in numbers not seen for decades. Combine with wildlife — wallabies, echidnas, and honeyeaters are abundant during spring.

Best Viewing Location

Flinders Chase National Park in the island's west — enter from the Playford Hwy from Kingscote (90 km). Sealed road to the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre with free car park. Rocky River campground is the best base. Kelly Hill Conservation Park (mallee heathland, eastern entry off South Coast Rd) is a reliable orchid site, 40 km from Penneshaw. National Parks SA entry fee applies to Flinders Chase.

When to Visit
September–October

What affects timing

Rainfall-influenced but generally reliable. Flinders Chase NP in the island's west and the mallee heathlands of Kelly Hill are typically the most productive areas. The 2019–20 fires regenerated much heathland and wildflower diversity has increased in affected areas.

Safety Information

Wear long pants in dense heathland. Some tracks in Flinders Chase NP remain closed or modified post-bushfire. Check the National Parks SA website before visiting.
