Southern Right Whale Season
high
July-September
SA
Southern right whales migrate into the sheltered waters of Encounter Bay near Victor Harbor each winter to rest, nurse calves, and socialise. Among the most approachable of all large whales, they are often found rolling, spy-hopping, and flipper-slapping just metres from shore. The Victor Harbor causeway and Granite Island provide outstanding free viewing without any boat — mothers and calves are regularly seen from the breakwater. Boat tours offer closer encounters for those who want to be on the water. This is one of the best shore-based whale-watching experiences in Australia, accessible to all ages and mobility levels.
What affects timing
Weekly variation in whale numbers. Peak sightings typically mid-August. Annual counts vary - some years bring exceptional numbers, others fewer. Mothers with calves tend to arrive later in the season.
Maintain legal distance if on the water (300 m minimum). Shore-based viewing at the Victor Harbor causeway and Granite Island is safe and free. Binoculars are strongly recommended. Do not approach on personal watercraft.
