Great White Shark Cage Diving
high
April - August
SA
The Neptune Islands off Port Lincoln are home to one of the largest aggregations of great white sharks in the world, and cage diving here is widely regarded as the premier shark encounter experience on earth. Operators lower a submerged cage from a purpose-built platform, placing guests face to face with these apex predators (some exceeding 5 metres!) in gin-clear water. This is not staged feeding: the sharks arrive entirely on their own terms, attracted by the scent of a resident fur seal colony. The encounter is humbling, adrenaline-charged, and reframes the ocean in a way that stays with you for life. A bucket-list experience for adventure travellers and ocean enthusiasts of any age.
All cage diving operations depart from Port Lincoln marina (Lincoln Cove Marina or Fisherman's Wharf), 650 km from Adelaide via the Lincoln Hwy. Ample car parking at the marina precinct. Overnight boat trips to the Neptune Islands take 5–8 hrs each way; day trips are not available due to the distance. Book well in advance.
What affects timing
Great white sharks are present year-round at the Neptune Islands but encounter probability peaks in the cooler months when Australian fur seal activity is highest. Individual trip success varies - some days produce multiple long encounters, others are minimal. Tour operators will advise on recent conditions.
All cage diving is conducted by licensed operators with purpose-built caged platforms. You are never in unprotected open water. Sea conditions cause trip cancellations - book with a flexible cancellation policy. Not suitable for those with claustrophobia, anxiety disorders, or significant health conditions. Minimum age applies.
