About This Event

On warm, wet spring nights in the Murraylands, the wetlands and roadside drainage channels erupt in a frog chorus of remarkable volume and diversity. SA's south-east supports over a dozen frog species, and a productive September night at the right wetland can produce a cacophony of popping, clicking, growling, and whistling calls from dozens of males advertising for mates simultaneously. Species present include the Peron's tree frog, the eastern banjo frog (whose resonant 'bonk' is immediately recognisable), and the uncommon southern bell frog in appropriate habitat. Frog-calling is a completely free, accessible, and deeply atmospheric natural experience that requires only a torch and a willingness to stand at a wetland edge after dark. A wonderful introduction for families with children.

Best Viewing Location

Wetlands near Narrung on the eastern shore of Lake Albert (Lake Albert Rd from Meningie, sealed then gravel, 2 hr from Adelaide) are highly productive. The road verge drainage channels near Tailem Bend and Murray Bridge also produce audible choruses after rain. No formal car park - pull over safely near wetland edges after dark. Take a torch, wear boots, and stand quietly for 5–10 minutes for your ears to adjust.

When to Visit
September - November

What affects timing

Intensity of calling is triggered by rainfall and rising temperatures. A warm, wet September produces the most spectacular choruses. Wetlands near Tailem Bend, Narrung, and Bool Lagoon edges are productive. Best heard at dusk and through the night.

Safety Information

Wetland edges can be slippery. Take a torch if visiting after dark. Do not handle frogs - skin oils and chemicals can harm them and some species secrete mild irritants.
