Murray cod are Australia's largest freshwater fish and one of the most culturally significant species in the Murray-Darling system. Their spring spawning season, triggered by warming water temperatures in September and October, draws them into shallow river channels near submerged logs and root masses, where males guard fertilised egg masses until hatching. This is the most active period for large cod. For naturalists, shallow water encounters with these prehistoric, deep-bodied fish (some exceeding a metre in length!) are deeply impressive.
The SA Riverland section of the Murray is the prime cod habitat. The Lock 5 area near Renmark and the Lyrup Flats stretch are well-regarded. Launch a canoe or kayak from Renmark riverfront (free public ramp) or hire a houseboat for multi-day exploration. Anglers can access bank fishing from the Bookmark Biosphere Reserve (Berri–Renmark corridor). SA's Riverland stretch of the Murray holds a recovering Murray Cod population.
What affects timing
Spawning is triggered by rising water temperatures, typically occurring when water reaches 16–18°C. In cool years, spawning may be delayed by 2–3 weeks. The river's largest cod tend to move into shallower water near woody debris during spawning.
Murray cod are a protected species. Check SA recreational fishing regulations before fishing. Do not disturb fish at known spawning sites. As at time of publication, Murray Cod are Catch and Release Only (the bag limit for Murray cod in SA is 0). Seasonal Closures: You are only allowed to catch and release Murray cod from 1 January to 31 July in the River Murray proper. No-Target Period: From 1 August to 31 December, targeting, fishing for, or trolling for Murray cod is completely prohibited to protect them during their spawning season
